Type

Our words carry weight, and so does our typography. The size, font and style of typeface we choose is one of the most recognizable aspects of the WVU brand. It can reinforce our bold and inspirational voice, or back up a smart and insightful idea. The following will help you decide how to match type with message.

Our main typeface is Helvetica Neue. It can be used in all instances, including subheads and body copy. When using Helvetica Neue Condensed Black, use it in all caps and only for headlines.

Alternate Font: When Helvetica Neue is not available, use Helvetica as a suitable replacement.

Our secondary typeface is Iowan Old Style. Like Helvetica Neue, Iowan Old Style is compelling enough for headlines, and legible enough for large amounts of smaller copy.

Alternate Font: When Iowan Old Style is not available, Times New Roman is a suitable replacement.

Traditional
Helvetica Neue Condensed Black

Helvetica Neue Condensed Black is our primary typeface for headlines, and should always be set in all caps. Do not use Helvetica Condensed Black for anything other than headlines.

Helvetica Neue Regular

Helvetica Neue Regular and Helvetica Bold can be used in all instances, including subheads and body copy.

Helvetica Neue Light

Helvetica Neue Light should not be reversed out onto color or photography to ensure legibility.

Iowan Old Style

Iowan Old Style should be used for more formal or academic communications. In cases of complex hierarchies, Iowan Old Style can be combined with Helvetica. Like Helvetica, Iowan Old Style is compelling enough for headlines, and legible enough for large amounts of smaller copy.

Purchasing Options

You can purchase fonts from MyFonts.com. We recommend purchasing the purchasing the 16 font package - Neue Helvetica Pro Basic Family - $163.99, then purchasing the single font – Neue Helvetica 97 Condensed Black - $42.99.

Type Hierarchy

Picking the appropriate typeface is just the beginning. Setting the proper hierarchy and combining font weights both play a significant role in making sure our type speaks loud and clear.

Headlines using Helvetica Condensed Bold should always be set in all caps.

All type, from headlines to body copy, should be left aligned, unjustified, with hyphenation turned off.

Helvetica and Iowan Old Style may be combined within the same composition, but should not be combined within the same headline, subhead, or body text.
